Hazeldene - Elliott Architects Ltd

This development proposed to retain the original building’s envelope, remodel the ground floor layout, and add a partial second storey. The proposal to use the existing fabric of the building was an intentional approach which allowed for maximising accommodation whilst minimising the footprint on the site. An extension to the South creates a large open plan kitchen, living and dining space with physical connection to the rear garden. The new first floor accommodates 3 bedrooms and a master suite.

Materials include blockwork with render finish to the ground floor and timber frame with naturally finished timber cladding to the first floor extension to which creates a clear identity of old and new. The approach to materials was to use traditional materials with modern detailing to create a more bespoke product.

The client’s ambition for a modern pavilion building on a rural site in the Northumbrian greenbelt required a sophisticated architectural approach; this has resulted in a design which has been carefully refined in order to achieve a harmony with its landscape setting. A key aspect of the design was to lower the form to provide a closer relationship with the landscape – this informed the decision to make the building single storey, and crucially to use a flat roof solution and a linear form. The building sits nestled back into the hillside, with the overall design being read as a series of horizontal elements which tie in to the contours of the landscape.

Hushh House

The conservation area character appraisal states that ‘Middleton Tyas is not a conservation area defined by large open spaces and vistas, rather by secret paths and secluded streets.’ This was also our shared reading of the site, and so the design embodies the idea of a raised secret garden, permeated by small courtyards which form another, finer layer to this romantic concept.

North Bank

North Bank lies on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Haydon Bridge in the Tyne valley. Despite its rural location the site has neighbours to three sides, and so the design was developed to be considerate of this, orientating the form south towards the wonderful views over the valley and the Pennines beyond.

Lying between the river and the high street, the site is tucked behind a garden wall, with the Grade II listed Percy Cottage beyond.

The design for St. Andrews road called for a sensitive approach in order to meet the client’s requirements whilst also being considerate of the conservation area context. The clients acquired the plot with an existing permission, but that proposal did not meet their functional needs, or their ambition for a high quality design.

The Dell

The site is beautiful and demanded something special to support and complement it. The client’s vision was for a building sympathetic to the sensitive setting whilst embodying a sense of fun, and the excitement of a magical secret woodland home.
