This project was a special scheme. The client appreciated the profound effect and positive results that the built environment has on its inhabitants. As a company that provides full time residential care to children with severe learning difficulties the client was specific in their brief that the building meet the practical needs of the end users whilst providing a comfortable, modern, naturally lit environment.

The aim to create a “home” rather than an institution was a priority.

To meet planning requirements we had to occupy the footprint of an existing derelict dwelling on the site which dictated the mass of the building. As a result of the existing deep plan we divided the space into two wings, one public and one private. In order to maintain natural light in the deep section a glazed spine in the roof top lit the central service spaces.

The undulating plan afforded open plan living and with the use of concealed sliding panels smaller more intimate spaces could be formed when required.
