Our client at the National Trust required a new coffee shop to be accommodated in an existing Grade II Listed Georgian Stable block on the Gibside Estate. We approached the design with a sensitive concept to ‘insert’ within the existing building fabric so as to provide the required accommodation whilst minimising impact on the existing building.

The new insertion was formed entirely of timber with the aim of creating a modern and warm space. Careful detailing and a close relationship with the joiner were key in ensuring a high quality finish to this simple project.

The services are cleverly concealed between the existing wall and the new fabric of the extension. The full height glazed structure was deliberately oversized to allow the original arched structure of the stable doors to be visible. Placement of wall panels were intentional to reveal instances of the existing crude structure of the stable walls.
